How to Achieve Success as a Real Estate Agent with Jen Gendece and Marc King
Getting a real estate license is a relatively easy thing to do. Anyone with $500 and a few weeks to spend studying can get licensed. However, it’s estimated that about 87% of real estate agents fail within the first 5 years. While there is no one easy path, we do believe there are a few keys to achieve success as a real estate agent in this highly competitive field.
Jen Gendece, real estate agent with Keller Williams, got her license just a few short years ago. However, she has already become a rising star in the local market, with a very bright future. Along with Jen we have Marc King, Area Director for Keller Williams, with us to discuss what they think has made Jen so successful and what the keys for agents starting out are.
Choose the Leader/Office
Choosing the right office is perhaps one of the most important decisions a new agent will make. Part of this decision will be personal preference, but there are some important factors to consider when making the decision.
Many times the most attractive company will be the one with the highest commission split. But remember, 100% of $0 is still $0. You’ll want to find an office/company that is dedicated to your success. Jen attributes much of her early success to being at Keller Williams. With their experienced leadership, like Marc King, and their industry-leading training it’s no wonder many top agents call Keller Williams home. Choosing the brokerage you work for is a tough decision, but be sure to find out first that they will be in your corner.
Be Learning Based/Coachable
This is more of a life lesson than one solely targeted to becoming a successful real estate agent. No matter where you are in your career you will always be able to learn from others…if you’re willing. Being open and receptive to constructive criticism is essential to growth. Also, have the willingness to admit where your weaknesses lie, your coach or mentor is not a mind reader. Open yourself up to the knowledge base around you and you’ll be astounded by what you can learn. Oh, and don’t forget that your clients will benefit from having a knowledgeable agent and they may just recommend you to their friends!
Work Hard
It’s no secret that hard work will find you success, but how hard are you willing to work? Marc says that Jen is just plain willing to do the things that other people aren’t. Leave your ego at home and put your nose to the grindstone. Outworking your competition will show your clients how much they mean to you. Which brings us to the next key..
Be Relational, Not Transactional
Many people are drawn to real estate by the potential for big paychecks. However, if you are solely focused on that, you will not gain clients for life. You want the people who chose you as your real estate agent to be raving fans! This is something Marc said that Jen just gets. She is focused on the needs of the person, not herself. Coming from a place of understanding and taking the time to figure out exactly what that person needs will get you clients that can’t stop talking about how great you are!
